Arsenal can be champions, says Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey says Arsenal can end an 11-year wait for the Premier League title this season following their 3-0 Community Shield victory against domestic champions Manchester City.

Arsenal led the Premier League table for much of last season before injuries and key away defeats to their title rivals effectively ended their challenge for the crown.

• Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal possess the most dangerous attacking line-up the club has seen for years.
• Wenger has spent £60 million this summer to improve his squad, the majority of which went on acquiring Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

• "I have more attacking options than I've had for a long time, that's for sure," Wenger said. "Three, four, five years ago every year we lost a big player. In the last two years we've added players, like Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
• "Of course that strengthens the squad. But I'm of course very ambitious but I'm a bit cautious as well. I look around me as well and I see that the other teams have strengthened as well."

The club did, however, end a nine-year wait for a trophy by winning the FA Cup and, with manager Arsene Wenger strengthening his squad this summer, Ramsey believes they are ready to mount a serious tilt for the title.

"I definitely think we can win the league - we were top of the table for the most amount of time last season,'' Ramsey said.

"The only thing we need to improve is our away record against the so-called bigger teams: if we had managed to nick the odd point or win in those games it would have been a lot closer last season, and maybe even we would have won. So that's something we can really focus on to work hard to improve."

Ramsey hailed the continued presence of Wenger, who agreed shortly after the end of last season to extend his 18-year stay in north London.

The Frenchman has spent around £60 million this summer - his highest outlay as Arsenal manager - in recruiting Alexis Sanchez, Calum Chambers, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina in order to improve his squad.

And Ramsey insists Wenger is the perfect fit for Arsenal; the midfielder hopes his team-mates can reward their manager's patience by delivering the Premier League trophy at the end of the season.

"It's great news and extremely pleasing for us as players that he [Wenger] signed that new contract, he's done so much in this game and for the game, and for this club too," Ramsey said.

"We're delighted that he's committed his future to the club again, and we're all looking forward to working with him for the next three years. Winning the league again would put him up there with the best managers ever in this league, no doubt.

"He's been very successful, he's built some great teams, helped some great players and hopefully now we can go on from last season and be successful again.

"He's as excited as anybody about the new season, with the new players we've got coming in. He realises what this team can do and what he believes we can achieve, so we're all looking forward and excited to be a part of that. It's a big attraction to be at the club and be a part of things, in the way that he thinks the game should be played.

"He's a great man-manager, he knows how to handle players and what's best for them. The way that he believes the game should be played, his philosophy on the game is extremely exciting and gives players license.

"He's very approachable and will always let players know how you can improve, or what you're doing well and things like that. So he's a great manager and all the players enjoy working with him and playing under him.''
