Giuseppe Rossi's agent has dismissed suggestions that the Fiorentina striker is a target for Liverpool.

Reports on Thursday claimed that Liverpool had made enquiries for the former Manchester United forward.

But Andrea Pastorello, Rossi's representative, insists that a deal is not on the cards. "There is nothing between Rossi and Liverpool," he told Italy's Tutto Mercato Web.

"There is absolutely nothing to comment on. Honestly, I don't know anything about this. I'm not aware of any offer. This is something that has come from England and nowhere else."

Rossi, 27, moved from the United States to Italy as a 12-year-old to join Parma's youth set-up.

He then joined United at the age of 17, making five league appearances in two years before loan spells at Newcastle and back at Parma.

Five years at Villarreal followed, but two cruciate knee ligament injuries - the first suffered in October 2011, the second in April 2012 - stalled his progress.

A tally of 16 goals in 21 league appearances last season for Fiorentina, who he joined in January 2013, suggested Rossi was back to his best.

But he was out of action for four months after sustaining medial knee ligament damage in January, and despite recovering before the end of last season, was left out of Italy's World Cup squad.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has been looking for a striker this summer, having sold last season's 31-goal top scorer Luis Suarez to Barcelona for £75 million in July.

Rickie Lambert arrived from Southampton in June to offer support to Daniel Sturridge, while Fabio Borini remains on the books despite Sunderland's attempts to persuade him to join them.

Loic Remy looked set to move to Anfield from Queens Park Rangers in July after a fee of £8m was agreed, but Liverpool pulled out of the deal following concerns over his medical.

Liverpool have been considering a move for Samuel Eto'o, who is a free agent after being released by Chelsea at the end of last season.
