Pulis leaves Crystal Palace by mutual consent

Tony Pulis has left Crystal Palace by mutual consent, the club has confirmed.

Pulis, 56, held crisis talks with club co-chairman Steve Parish on Thursday over what the coach believed was a debilitating lack of transfer activity.

Wenger shocked by Pulis exit

  • Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed his shock at Tony Pulis' departure from Crystal Palace.
  • Palace face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in their Premier League opener and Wenger will now be without his counterpart in the away dugout.
  • "It was a complete surprise and what consequence that will have I don't know. He has done a remarkable job, he worked a miracle," Wenger said.
  • "I was at the managers meeting Monday and he showed no indication of it. I don't know if it will have an impact on the game.
  • Speculation led to suggestions that Pulis had fallen out with Steve Parish regarding control over the club's transfer activity. Wenger insists when it comes to transfers, a manager should have complete control.
  • "Transfers should be the manager's job, if not we are just robots. I couldn't work with a Director of Football. The guy's responsible for the results should be responsible for buying the players."

However, the club confirmed on Friday that Pulis had left his post a day before the start of the new Premier League season. Keith Millen will take charge of Palace's opening game against Arsenal on Saturday.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that Tony Pulis has left the club by mutual consent with immediate effect.

"Keith Millen will be in temporary charge of the team for our opening Premier League game against Arsenal this Saturday. The club would like to thank Tony for his efforts with the club during last season and wish him all the best for the future."

A move for Manchester United's out of favour winger Wilfried Zaha is believed to have brought the situation to a head as Pulis wanted the youngster on loan.

Sources stated earlier that the coach has been "fuming" after missing out on virtually all of his top targets. Palace have only signed Frazier Campbell from Cardiff City, Brede Hangeland on a free, Blackpool's Chris Kettings and Martin Kelly from Liverpool so far.
