Pellegrini: City players couldn't last 90 minutes

Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that Edin Dzeko will sign a new contract with Manchester City.

The Premier League champions still have to finalise the agreement with the striker, but manager Pellegrini is confident he will become the sixth player to agree to extend his deal at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero all signed five-year deals last week while Samir Nasri and Aleksandar Kolarov had already committed their futures to the club.

Pellegrini said: "I don't think it's 100 percent finished but, yes, he will renew his contract. He's a very important player for us. It's very important that we have four top strikers because we have so many games in four competitions."

Dzeko enjoyed his most prolific season for City last year, scoring 26 goals, including four in the last three games as Pellegrini's team became champions.

The 28-year-old began the current campaign with an assist for City's first league goal in their 2-0 win at Newcastle, when his backheeled flick set up Silva to score at St James' Park.

Pellegrini said: "For me, he was one of the best players of the game, not only because he participated in the first goal, [but] because he worked the whole game.

"He won a lot of aerial duels, he supported the ball, it was a very complete game, but I repeat, I think that Edin finished last season playing the same way as he's started now."
