United and Sporting confirm deal for Rojo

Manchester United have confirmed a deal has been agreed with Sporting Lisbon for Marcos Rojo, while Nani will join the Portuguese club on a season-long loan.

Earlier on Tuesday, Rojo revealed he would be leaving for Old Trafford and the Portuguese club were the first to announce the news on their official Twitter account.

Shortly after, United revealed a deal had been agreed for the defender, subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms

Rojo will reportedly cost £16 million (€20m) and Sporting will receive 20% of the profits if United sell him on for more than £18.4m (€23m). He will become United's third major signing of the summer after the arrivals of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera.

United turned to the Argentina international after accepting defeat in their attempts to sign Dortmund's Mats Hummels and Thomas Vermaelen, who joined Barcelona.

However, agreeing a deal for Rojo has proved difficult for the Premier League club, with ownership issues having complicated a move for their target.

United have been short of defenders following the summer departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra and manager Louis van Gaal's decision to switch to a formation that requires three centre-backs.

The Dutchman had to give 20-year-old Tyler Blackett a debut in Saturday's defeat to Swansea but the left-sided Rojo, who recently apologised to Lisbon fans for trying to force a move to Old Trafford, is likely to take his place.

Nani came off the bench against Swansea but will be allowed to leave for the season to rejoin his former club. The winger has scored 40 goals in 228 games for United since leaving Sporting in 2007.

While he was given a lucrative five-year deal last September, he has struggled in the last two seasons.
