Man United debate: Moyes vs. Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal has admitted that Angel Di Maria's arrival at Manchester United may force him to change the system he has only just introduced.

United confirmed the signing of Di Maria for a British record transfer fee of £59.7 million on Tuesday, shortly before their humiliating 4-0 defeat at MK Dons in the second round of the League Cup.

The club's disastrous start this season, with just one point taken from their opening two Premier League games, is in stark contrast to the six victories in pre-season, when Van Gaal rigorously implemented his new 3-5-2 formation.

Now, after just six weeks in charge, the Dutchman who appeared to have made the system the foundation for his approach at the club, admits he could already be forced to change direction.

"Now Di Maria is coming and he has to adapt also to our culture. He cannot change [immediately]," Van Gaal said.

"The process needs time so we shall see whether with Di María we have to change the system or not."

However, Van Gaal also likened Di Maria's arrival to his purchase of Arjen Robben at Bayern Munich five years ago, saying the Argentine can transform United's fortunes in a similar way.

"I have bought Di Maria because he can play inside and wide, that's very handy for a coach. At Bayern Munich, I also bought Robben and he can also play in the wings and inside."
