Shinji Kagawa's miserable time at Manchester United has been brought to an end by former club Borussia Dortmund, who have resigned the Japanese midfielder for an undisclosed fee, thought to be around £6.5 million.

It is a discount price for Kagawa, who joined United two years ago for £12m. Kagawa's 57th and final appearance for United came in last week's humiliating 4-0 League Cup defeat by MK Dons.

"I said on the day of my departure that my story with Borussia Dortmund was not completed," Kagawa told Dortmund's official website.

"I wanted to realise my Premier League dream but now I'm happy to be back in Dortmund in this great team. Dortmund is like a family. I am proud they have never forgotten me and I can belong again."

Kagawa scored just six goals in his time at United, during which he failed to fit in under three different managers - Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, who was heavily critical of Kagawa's attitude.
