Falcao, who cost Monaco €60 million (£47.4m) last summer, is set to join Louis van Gaal's squad, sources told ESPN.
United will reportedly have to pay £20m to cover a loan fee and wages for Falcao, who had also been a target for Real Madrid and had been linked with Arsenal and Manchester City
His arrival will be one of two transfers United are expected to complete on deadline day, along with finalising Daley Blind's £14m move from Ajax.

Van Gaal has already brought in Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo and Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.
Real had been the favourites to sign Falcao, whose departure from Monaco seemed to have been signalled when he was omitted from their squad to face Lille on Saturday.
The striker also denied posting on his Twitter account that he was close to joining Real at the weekend - claiming he had been hacked after deleting the tweet.
The 28-year-old, who missed the World Cup because of a cruciate ligament injury, scored 70 goals in 91 games for Atletico Madrid and 72 goals in 87 matches for Porto before joining Monaco.
Falcao's signing could pave the way for Javier Hernandez to move to Real on loan but it remains to be seen how Van Gaal would fit the Colombian, Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Di Maria into the same side.
