Liverpool are considering a move for former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes in order to provide extra competition for Simon Mignolet.

Valdes is currently recovering from a torn cruciate knee ligament and is not expected to be fit before November.

But the 32-year-old can be signed outside the transfer window because he is a free agent, having left the Nou Camp when his contract expired in June.

Liverpool are prepared to give him time to prove his fitness before going through with a deal, sources have told ESPN.

Mignolet has been the undisputed first-choice at Anfield since arriving from Sunderland for £9 million in June 2013.

The Belgium international played in all 38 of Liverpool's Premier League games last season, with back-up Brad Jones appearing only in FA Cup ties.

Pepe Reina, who was first choice before Mignolet's arrival, spent last season on loan at Napoli and was sold to Bayern Munich last month.

Valdes, a graduate of Barcelona's youth set-up, first indicated in May 2013 that he was planning to leave the Nou Camp. But he has been out of action since suffering serious knee damage during a league match against Celta Vigo in March, an injury which kept him out of contention for a place in Spain's World Cup squad.

Rodgers meanwhile, is looking to move on some of his fringe players before the transfer window closes.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has indicated that he is still interested in signing Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, a deal which remains incomplete more than a month after the two clubs agreed a £14m fee.

"I know how people feel but unfortunately we cannot give you all the information, all the true information on why he's not with us," Poyet said. "I know from the outside it looks like it's him not wanting to come to Sunderland because of whatever, but I can promise you it's not like that.

"Now I keep it open because he's still a Liverpool player, and maybe he can still become a Sunderland player."

Centre-back Sebastian Coates has been linked with a loan move to Sunderland and Napoli are reportedly interested in midfielder Lucas Leiva. Winger Oussama Assiadi and Spanish forward Suso are also available for moves.
