Hull and Palace break transfer records

Hull have completed the loan signing of Hatem Ben Arfa from Newcastle, completing a stunning day of transfer activity for the club, who also brought in Abel Hernandez, Gaston Ramirez and Mohamed Diame.

Steve Bruce was the Premier League's most-active manager on deadline day, breaking his club's transfer record for Uruguay international Hernandez, adding fellow Uruguayan Ramirez on loan from Southampton and paying West Ham around £3.5 million for Diame.

But Ben Arfa was the icing on the cake, completing a surprise late switch that required an extension to get over the line almost two hours after the original 11pm deadline.

"Thankfully everything has come together, but the one that has come in the last few hours was Ben Arfa," said Bruce.

"Whatever's happened at Newcastle has happened. He wants to come here and play and get his career kick-started again.

"Hopefully I can bring the best out of him. Hatem is a superb addition to the squad, and brings a lot of attacking flare."

Both Ben Arfa and Ramirez have signed until the end of the current campaign, while Diame and Hernandez have each penned three-year deals, with the latter holding the option of a fourth.

Confirming their arrivals, Bruce said: ''Abel is a fantastic signing and highlights just how far the club has come in such a short space of time.

''He is an exciting talent and like myself, I'm sure the supporters can't wait to see him in action.

''I'm delighted to welcome Mohamed to the club. His experience, both at international level and in the Premier League will be invaluable for us as we look to cement our place in the top-flight."

The players' arrival at the KC Stadium follows on from the exit of George Boyd, who was sold to Burnley earlier on Monday.

Boyd, 28, has joined the Clarets for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract.

Bruce added: "I've been in the game a long time and if all professional footballers were like George Boyd my job would be easy.''

Boyd himself told Burnley's official website: "I'm delighted to be here, it's a big league the Premier League and it's where everyone wants to play so I can't wait to get started. As soon I heard about the interest and spoke to the gaffer [Sean Dyche] here it was a no-brainer for me.

"I think Turf Moor is an intimidating place to come for any away team, and we can use that atmosphere to make it a difficult place for teams to come. We did really well last year at Hull to stay in the league and get to an FA Cup final and I think to stay up will be the aim here too."

Burnley have also signed 19-year-old Chelsea midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah and 21-year-old Manchester United defender Michael Keane, pending approval, on loan until January.

There were another pair of departures from Old Trafford, with 20-year-old midfielder Nick Powell heading to Leicester on loan until the end of the season and 20-year-old winger Tom Lawrence signing on a permanent deal.

Crystal Palace were another team breaking their transfer record on deadline day after they agreed a £7m deal accepted by Wigan Athletic for midfielder James McArthur.

The 26-year-old almost joined Leicester last week, but Nigel Pearson opted to sign Esteban Cambiasso instead.

Palace also confirmed the capture of left-back Zeki Fryers from Tottenham, with Kevin Doyle joining on loan from Wolves until January and Glenn Murray going in the other direction.

Elsewhere, Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan. The 23-year-old has followed fellow defenders Jack Robinson and Daniel Agger out of Anfield as manager Brendan Rodgers continues to move out his fringe players in the closing hours of the transfer window.

Sunderland have also signed Argentine Ricardo Alvarez, 26, from Inter Milan, where he scored 14 goals in 90 appearances in three years.

"It's a great opportunity, a great club and I'm looking forward to playing in England," Alvarez, who has been capped seven times, said.

Southampton left it late to complete the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, who has joined Ronald Koeman's side on a season-long loan deal after helping Diego Simeone's outfit to their first La Liga title in 18 years last season.

The 25 year-old, who can play at centre-half and right-back, has 37 caps for Belgium and represented Marc Wilmots' side in four of their five matches at the World Cup in Brazil.

He told the club's official website: "The trainer [Ronald Koeman] likes how I play and really wanted me to come here, which is what convinced me to come. I really wanted a trainer that believes in me, because that's important.

"I think this is an upcoming club. Southampton put a lot of effort in to get me, so now I want to give something back to the club by doing my best to help the team. I want to give everything for Southampton."

Southampton have also confirmed the signing of Senegalese winger Sadio Mane from Red Bull Salzburg for an undisclosed fee.

Meanwhile, West Ham have signed Morgan Amalfitano, who starred in the Premier League for West Brom last season, on a one-year deal from Marseille.

Oussama Assaidi has returned to Stoke on loan from Liverpool after a successful spell at the Britannia Stadium last season.
