A deal has been proposed which would see Wembley host the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 in return for England backing a Germany bid for the 2024 tournament, a German FA official has revealed.

UEFA is holding Euro 2020 in 13 different countries to mark the 60th anniversary of the tournament and only Wembley and Munich's Allianz Arena have put in bids to host the climax of the competition.

It now appears that Germany will take a back seat in the vote on September 19 - and will also support a possible England bid for Euro 2028.

Helmut Sandrock, general secretary of the German football federation (DFB) told Sport Bild magazine: "We've spoken with them [England] about it, that they could hold off Euro 2024 and support our application. In turn we'd forego the Euro 2020 games and support England's bid for Euro 2028.''

It is not the first time there has been such a deal between the two nations. England famously reneged on a 'gentleman's agreement' not to bid for the 2006 World Cup after Germany agreed to back the bid for Euro '96. That backfired as Germany won the World Cup bid and England's bid was humiliated.

DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach however, has said they will wait until the day of the vote on September 19 before deciding whether to pull out of the 2020 race.

Football Association general secretary Alex Horne last week expressed confidence in Wembley winning the 2020 bid for Wembley and that the FA will consider a bid to host the entire Euro 2028 tournament.
