Chelsea striker Diego Costa has withdrawn from Spain's squad to face Macedonia on Monday, citing a hamstring injury.

Costa struggled as Spain lost to a second-half goal from France's Loic Remy in a friendly on Thursday and it has now been revealed that he had been suffering with a problem in his left leg.

A Spanish football federation statement read: "Diego Costa has a myofascial injury to his hamstring muscle in his left thigh. The injury was detected with an MRI scan after the player expressed some discomfort during yesterday's match against France.

"All the tests carried out by the medical staff will be sent to Chelsea."

Chelsea's next fixture in a Premier League clash with Swansea at Stamford Bridge on September 13 and Jose Mourinho will be hoping his striker recovers to take his place in the starting XI.

The 25-year-old, who suffered from a hamstring problem at the end of last season while playing for Atletico Madrid, is the leading scorer in the Premier League so far, having netted four times in three appearances.

Barcelona youngster Munir El Haddadi will replace Costa in the Spain squad for Group C clash at the Bernabeu.
