Liverpool sold £50,000's worth of Balotelli shirts on striker's first day
Liverpool sold £50,000 worth of Mario Balotelli shirts on the day the Italian striker arrived from AC Milan, according to the club's chief executive Ian Ayre.
Ayre, who was speaking at the Soccerex Global Convention in Manchester, said last month's £16 million move for Balotelli began to generate returns as soon as he became a Liverpool player.
"You have to be ready for these opportunities," Ayre told a seminar entitled 'How to run a club successfully'. "In the past we didn't capitalise on opportunities but those days are long gone."
The £50,000 worth of shirts works out at around 770 adult shirts at £65 apiece - a replica Liverpool shirt costs £49.99, with an extra £15 for Balotelli's name to be printed on the back.
Balotelli impressed on his Liverpool debut in the 3-0 victory over Tottenham at White Hart Lane. And, with team-mate Daniel Sturridge struggling a thigh injury, the striker looks certain to make his first appearance at Anfield against Aston Villa on Saturday.
