Alan Pardew will remain in charge of Newcastle for next weekend's game against Hull City, sources have told ESPN.

The pressure on Pardew's position increased following Newcastle's 4-0 hammering at his former club Southampton on Saturday, with supporters calling for the manager to leave before, during and after the game.

Souness has sympathy for Pardew

  • Graeme Souness has sympathised with Alan Pardew's position at Newcastle but admitted he is paying the price for under-performing at a "big club".
  • "Results are everything," Souness told Sky Sports. "It used to be you got half a season or a full season if you were not winning but now you get six matches. If you are in such a job then you know that is the case.
  • "Newcastle is a big club with very passionate supporters who can get very frustrated at times and can be very quick to show their emotions, but that's the price on the ticket if you want to manage a club like Newcastle."

The latest setback means Newcastle have taken just five points from their last 11 Premier League matches - but Pardew still has the backing of club owner Mike Ashley and will remain in charge for now.

Pardew has appealed for time and patience from supporters following a summer of recruitment that saw the likes of Remy Cabella, Jack Colback and Daryl Janmaat join the club.

Hull manager Steve Bruce is the bookmakers' favourite to take over from Pardew if he loses his job, but has said that speculation is "disrespectful."

However, unless there is a change of heart from the Newcastle hierarchy, Pardew will remain in his post to face what will be billed as another must-win game against Hull.
