Wilshere recognises Arsenal struggles

Mikel Arteta has told Arsenal that they can forget about winning the Champions League this season if they put in a repeat performance of Tuesday's dismal 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal were outclassed in their opening group game with Dortmund pouncing on Arsene Wenger's depleted defence to seal a comfortable win through goals from Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Welbeck will be worth the wait

Wenger's side were guilty of giving the ball away on numerous occasions, with £16 million deadline day signing Danny Welbeck also wasteful up front, and captain Arteta believes Arsenal's wait to win their first Champions League will continue if they don't learn from their mistakes.

"If you make the mistakes we did, against top sides, we know there is no chance to win the Champions League," Arteta said. "We have to react. We have to analyse what we have done wrong and try to improve.

"We encouraged them to [attack] by giving the ball away so many times in very difficult positions where the team is open. When that is the situation, they are very good. They exploit the spaces very well and put us under pressure.

"I am very disappointed because we knew their strengths, what we had to avoid and what we did was encourage them to play their game."

Arsenal will be looking to bounce back when they travel to Aston Villa on Saturday in the Premier League and midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain says they face a big test.

"Villa are a good side," he said. "We have to be at the required level. If we believe in ourselves as title contenders this year we will have to go with the belief that we will win the game."
