Ozil answers critics

Mesut Ozil claims Danny Welbeck's speed and tactical awareness has made life simpler for Arsenal's midfielders since his £16 million move to the club.

Ozil produced a brilliant display in the 3-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday, opening the scoring before teeing up Welbeck to score his first goal for his new club after making the switch from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

"When you analyse [Welbeck's] game, you notice that he makes a lot of runs and knows where he needs to be," Ozil told Arsenal's official website. "We're pleased to have a striker like him here. He makes the game simpler for us through his runs and speed.

"[On Saturday] he proved again that he is very dangerous in front of goal and personally, I'm happy for him because in recent games, he missed a few chances. Things worked really well for him on Saturday and that's why I'm pleased for him."

Ozil's goal was a timely reminder of his ability in an Arsenal shirt, having faced criticism following a string of poor performances - most notably against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week.

The Germany international's response to such opinions has been defiant but he has also paid tribute to the Arsenal fans and his team-mates.

"When you assess [Welbeck's] pass, it was really well timed," Ozil said. "He saw me and played me through to finish. I didn't have to do that much because I was one-on-one against the goalkeeper and made sure that I stayed ice-cold in front of goal - that was that."
