Hamann excited for Merseyside Derby

Kolo Toure believes Liverpool can cut out the errors that have been a fixture of their poor start in the Premier League this season when they take on Everton in Saturday's Merseyside derby.

Liverpool have lost three of their opening five games in the league but bounced back from their 3-1 defeat at West Ham with a remarkable penalty shootout win against Middlesbrough in the League Cup.

Toure was among the scorers with 30 spot-kicks needed to separate the two sides after it had finished 2-2 following extra-time on Tuesday. But despite knowing he will likely be back on the bench for the visit of Everton, Toure feels Liverpool's squad players will prove important this season.

"We will learn from our mistakes and prepare for what we know will be a tough game," Toure told the Liverpool Echo.

"We beat them 4-0 here last season and I am sure they will know we are really quick going forward.

"It will be a tight game but we're at home and we'll look to go out fast. We know winning this one would make a big difference.

"There's a lot riding on it and we need the three points. We can't think about any other games coming up, we need to focus on Everton and give everything to this game.

"With that performance [against Middlesbrough] we showed that Liverpool have a good squad. Anyone can come in and do well.

"The bench is going to be really important this season because there are so many games with the Champions League as well as the other competitions."

Tuesday was Toure's first start this season and first overall since the 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage in February, when he scored a calamitous own goal.

"I was so happy to play," he said. "We have a good squad and the manager has to pick the players. For sure I want to play more but it's up to the manager to put the right players into the team at the right time.

"I've never been part of a shootout quite like that.

"I remember in the African Nations Cup against Cameroon we had a long shootout with the player who took the first one eventually having to take another penalty which he missed. But it didn't go on for as long as this one.

"This one was the longest. It was unbelievable, 30 penalties. I took our seventh and I thought it was coming back to me again.

"It was tough but we showed a strong mentality to keep scoring goals. That showed the strength of the team."
