Manchester United have confirmed that Ander Herrera suffered a fractured rib during Saturday's win against West Ham at Old Trafford with the midfielder set to miss three weeks.

The Spaniard came off in the second half of the 2-1 victory and was assessed by United's medical staff on Tuesday.

United said in a statement on their official website that they will "monitor his progress over the next few weeks".

Herrera, who became manager Louis van Gaal's first signing when he joined for £28.8 million in June, had voiced his optimism that he would not be out for long.

Following the match, he wrote on his official Facebook page: "Three very important points! I hope my back is fine soon. Thanks for your messages!"

Vice-captain Darren Fletcher could be the logical replacement for Herrera, who has already spent one spell on the sidelines this season having missed three games in August with an ankle injury.

United were without nine injured players for the West Ham game and have the added problem of captain Wayne Rooney being forced to miss their next three matches through suspension.

However, defender Tyler Blackett, who served a one-match ban in that match, is available again for Sunday's home encounter with Everton.

Michael Carrick is also progressing faster than expected in his recovery from an ankle injury, manager Van Gaal has said, although he might not be available until after the international break.

Phil Jones, who has a hamstring problem, is another who should make his comeback in October
