Hartlepool caretaker managers Sam Collins and Stephen Pears could opt to make changes for the home Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Sheffield United.

Pools slipped to the bottom of Sky Bet League Two after Saturday's disappointing home defeat to Carlisle and following Colin Cooper's resignation, Collins and Pears will take charge of their first game.

Winger Jack Compton and defender Stuart Parnaby (both knee) are still struggling, while on-loan defender David Atkinson (hamstring) has returned to parent club Middlesbrough for treatment.

Pools, who received a bye in the first round, are chasing their first win in six matches.

Sheffield United will be without suspended striker Michael Higdon, who was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Daniel Jones in Saturday's defeat at Chesterfield.

Boss Nigel Clough has hinted Chris Porter could be involved at Hartlepool in Higdon's absence after being left out of the squad at the weekend.

Winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce is hoping to return to the starting line-up after stepping off the substitutes' bench at the weekend following a calf injury.

Another forward, Mark McNulty, is also pushing for a recall after stepping off the bench to score at Chesterfield, while defenders Bob Harris and Ben Davies are in contention for starts.
