The FA has nominated former Manchester United chief executive David Gill to become FIFA's next British vice-president.

Gill resigned his role with United in the summer of 2013 after a decade in the position, and was subsequently elected to UEFA's Executive Committee.

The FIFA Executive Committee has representatives from CONMEBOL, AFC, CAF, CONCACAF and OFC among its vice-presidents, in addition to another representing either the English FA, Scottish FA, Welsh FA or Northern Irish FA. Jim Boyce, of Northern Ireland, currently holds the British position.

Under new reforms, UEFA members will select a vice-president from the list of candidates put forward by the four British associations in March next year, and Gill will stand as the English representative.

Gill said on the FA's official website: "This is a decision I have been thinking about for some time. Although I had initially wanted to focus on developing my relatively new role within UEFA, I believe there is an opportunity, if elected, to use the FIFA position to make a real difference while complementing that ongoing work.

"Having sounded out many people across the game including fellow board members at Manchester United, The FA and UEFA, I would hope to make a positive contribution and use my candidacy to drive a debate for continued reform."

If successful, Gill would replace Boyce as the British representative on the FIFA ExCo from May 2015.
