Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul will be assessed before Saturday's Premier League match against Leicester after scans on his elbow injury showed ligament damage.

Krul sustained the problem during a training session with Netherlands last Saturday and returned to Tyneside before his country's shock 2-0 loss in Iceland on Monday.

"Newcastle United have received the results of goalkeeper Tim Krul's scan on Monday," a statement on the club's official website read.

"It showed ligament damage to his left elbow and Krul will be assessed further by the Magpies' medical staff ahead of Saturday's Premier League fixture against Leicester City."

Rob Elliot is expected to deputise against Leicester at St James' Park as Alan Pardew's side continue their pursuit of a first Premier League win of the season.
