Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has accepted he is yet to produce the form to justify his £27 million price tag.

United made Shaw one of the most expensive teenagers in world football when they signed him from Southampton in June and he believes his displays are improving after a slow start to his Old Trafford career.

He missed the beginning of the season because of a hamstring injury but has played in United's last three games, although he was partly culpable for West Bromwich Albion's opener in Monday's 2-2 draw.

"I know I haven't been up to my full potential and I think maybe people can see that at the moment," Shaw said. "They haven't seen the best of me yet.

"I am trying hard and it's about getting used to everything. When you come to a club like this it's never easy for a young player like me. But I'll get myself starting soon and put in good performances.

"I wouldn't say I've been horrendous but I know I can do much better. And I need to do better. I've come to Manchester United and I know what they need. I've been working hard and the performances will come."

United manager Louis van Gaal said in the summer that Shaw needs to be fitter while United go into Sunday's match against Chelsea 10 points behind the league leaders.

Shaw however, insisted it is not a formality that Jose Mourinho's team will win the title, adding: "No, not yet. It's a long season so we'll have to see what happens. We're going to work hard this week and be ready for the challenge on Sunday. It's a massive test. They're flying at the moment."
