Wayne Rooney is set to return to the Manchester United team against Manchester City on Sunday after fears he would miss the derby were dismissed.

United captain Rooney was spotted limping at an event with club sponsors on Monday but sources close to the club told ESPN that he is fully fit.

Louis van Gaal is expected to bring Rooney straight back into his starting line-up after he missed United's last three games.

Rooney has not played for his club since September after incurring a three-match suspension for his sending off in the 2-1 win against West Ham at Old Trafford, when he kicked out at Stewart Downing.

Rooney, who is United's 11-goal record scorer in Manchester derbies, could replace Juan Mata, who has been substituted in their last two games.

United are also waiting to see if Radamel Falcao, who missed Sunday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea because of a knee injury, is fit to feature at the Etihad Stadium.
