Mesut Ozil is battling back to fitness with his knee still in a brace following the injury he sustained for Arsenal against Chelsea earlier this month.

Ozil and Arsene Wenger were stunned when it was revealed that the midfielder suffered a "serious knee injury" in the game at Stamford Bridge, with the ligament damage only identified by German national team medical staff several days after the injury was sustained.

It seems likely that Ozil will not play first team football again in 2014, but he was eager to show his supporters that he is doing all he can to stay fit while he waits for his knee damage to heel.

The midfielder tweeted a picture of himself working out in the gym on Thursday.

Wenger has refused to put a timescale on Ozil's recovery, as the Arsenal manager continues to insist the belated detection of the injury is not the fault of his medical staff.

"We have our own specialist giving us his opinion after reading the scan and examining Mesut," said Wenger. "We will follow our own recommendations."

Arsenal's midfield injury crisis has been eased in the last couple of weeks by the return to fitness of Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta, while Theo Walcott is pushing for a return to Premier League action in the home game against Burnley on Saturday.

Wenger's biggest injury concern heading into his next fixture focuses on full-back Kieran Gibbs, who is struggling with a hip problem.
