Manchester City's quest to trim their squad down to 25 players for their assault on next season's Premier League looks to be in session after closing in on the £2.5 million sale of Javier Garrido to Lazio.

The Spaniard is unwanted after the costly signing of Serbian full-back Aleksandar Kolarov and is now wanted by the Roman club as a direct replacement after their first choice of Luca Antonelli will not now be arriving from Parma.

"We are a step closer to the definitive agreement for Garrido," Lazio president Claudio Lotito said.

Garrido's three seasons at City have been of diminishing returns and he found himself behind Wayne Bridge and Pablo Zabaleta in the reckoning under Roberto Mancini.

The Italian coach is expected to ship out other unwanted players, with the likes of Roque Santa Cruz, Felipe Caicedo, Jo, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Craig Bellamy, Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Ireland all linked with moves away from Eastlands.
