Ron Vlaar's agent has claimed now is the time for the defender to make "a nice big move in his career".

Vlaar, who is out of contract next summer, is thought to be a target of the Manchester United and Arsenal and was linked with a move away from current club Aston Villa after impressing at the World Cup with the Netherlands.

The 29-year-old eventually stayed at Villa Park, but sources have told ESPN that the club are holding out for an offer of £12 million from United ahead of a possible January deal.

Arnold Oosterveer, Vlaar's agent, suggested the defender should take his opportunity and secure a move to a team that matches his ambitions.

"It is obvious that for Ron, now is the moment to make a nice big move in his career," Oosterveer told the Mirror. "Ron is very ambitious.

"The situation is ideal for Ron right now. You can imagine that we are not in a hurry. I don't want to react to the rumour that he will move to either Arsenal or Man United, but Ron is very ambitious."

Vlaar however, claimed he has discussed a potential extension to his contract with Villa manager Paul Lambert, although he admitted no deal had yet been reached.

"I have nothing to say because there is nothing going on," Vlaar said. "I have spoken to the gaffer a few times [about a new deal], but that is it so far."

Vlaar signed for Villa from for Feyenoord in 2012 and has since made 66 Premier League appearances for the Midlands club.
