Nani is hopeful he can resurrect his Manchester United career despite being deemed surplus to requirements this season.

The Portugal international returned to his former club Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan in a deal that took Argentina defender Marcos Rojo to Old Trafford last summer.

Nani, who has scored five goals for Sporting this term, has three years remaining on his United contract after the current campaign.

And he believes he could return to Old Trafford, telling reporters: "Why not? I went out [to Sporting] to play more and get to my best. If there is an opportunity, we will see."

Nani scored 40 goals in 228 games for United after joining from Sporting, but has made just 14 Premier League starts since 2012.

He was back at Old Trafford on Tuesday night when he helped Portugal beat Argentina 1-0 in a friendly.

He added: "It was a very tough game for us but we knew when we play against a team like that, it is very difficult.

"All the players did well. We defended the result but tried to win the game as well and, in the end, we had a bit of pressure and we won the game. It's great for us."

However, Nani was involved in a challenge that left United's record signing Angel Di Maria in pain, when he caught the Argentine on his right foot.
