Louis van Gaal has warned Wayne Rooney that he must start replicating his international form for Manchester United.

Rooney has scored seven goals in his last seven appearances for England, but has just three in eight for his club this season and was sent off against West Ham United.

Confusion at United over Blind injury

  • Manchester United are confident that Daley Blind's knee injury is not as serious as first feared, manager Louis van Gaal has stated.
  • Blind was taken off with suspected knee ligament damage during Netherlands' Euro 2016 qualifier against Latvia on Sunday.
  • However, confusion spread during Van Gaal's Friday press conference when the club tweeted Blind would be sidelined for six months - before later clarifying that was not the case.

The striker won his 100th cap for England in last weekend's Euro 2016 qualifier victory against Slovenia, in which he scored, before adding two more to his tally in Tuesday's friendly win against Scotland.

While Van Gaal praised Rooney's international exploits, he also cautioned that he must score more goals domestically.

"Rooney is the youngest [England] player with 100 caps, it's fantastic," he said. "His sons are standing there, proud and the father is proud too.

"I have congratulated him but he now has to score for United."

If Rooney does manage a goal on the weekend, he will surpass Robbie Fowler as the record goalscorer against Arsenal with 11 goals.

Two of those goals came in Rooney's teenage years at Everton, including his first-ever Premier League goal - a spectacular last-minute winner in 2002 that ended Arsenal's 30-match unbeaten record.
