Jack Wilshere has been ruled out of action for three months after having surgery on his ankle, Arsenal have confirmed.

Wilshere sustained damage to ligaments in his left ankle during Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United as he was tackled by defender Paddy McNair, and missed the Gunners' 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Arsenal said in a statement that the operation was "successful" and added: "Jack will now commence his injury rehabilitation programme with the Arsenal medical team."

"Everyone at the club wishes Jack a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch as soon as possible."

Among the matches Wilshere is expected to miss are key Premier League trips to Liverpool (December 21), Manchester City (January 18) and Tottenham (February 7), as well as the first leg of the Gunners' last-16 tie in the Champions League and several rounds of the FA Cup.

Goalkeeping duo Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina, defender Mathieu Debuchy, attacking pair Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott and striker Danny Welbeck were all already sidelined for the Dortmund game.

Arsenal's injury woes were worsened after midfielder Mikel Arteta came off with a calf problem manager Arsene Wenger described as "quite serious", while striker Yaya Sanogo was also brought off after scoring his first official goal for the club.

Wenger said: "Mikel Arteta doesn't look good - it's a calf. I think he will be out for a while. The injuries are difficult to take on the chin. We go into many games, and we need as many people as possible available. The injury situation is a problem - we lost two players tonight. We lost Sanogo as well on a hamstring problem."
