Manchester City leapfrogged Southampton into second place in the Premier League with victory at St Mary's on Sunday.

City felt they should have had a penalty when Sergio Aguero appeared to be fouled by Jose Fonte early on, but referee Mike Jones controversially booked the striker for simulation.

Chances followed at both ends, but the match remained goalless until the 51st minute, when Yaya Toure fired home.

Saints were given hope when Eliaquim Mangala after sent off on 74 minutes, but Frank Lampard extended City's lead soon afterwards when he was allowed space to drive the ball into the bottom corner.

Aguero might have extended their advantage when he ran clean through only to be denied by Fraser Forster, but he made amends with an assist for Gael Clichy to score in the dying moments.
