Pellegrini: We beat a very strong team

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will find out on Monday whether the hamstring problem he suffered against Southampton was a strain or just cramp.

Kompany struggled with the problem towards the end of City's 3-0 victory at Southampton on Sunday, and now faces scans to determine the extent of his injury.

Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Kompany will be assessed ahead of his side's Premier League trip to Sunderland on Wednesday night.

Given the fact Eliaquim Mangala will be banned following his red card for two bookings at St Mary's, Pellegrini could be forced into a defensive reshuffle if Kompany can't feature on Wearside.

"Kompany has a problem with his hamstring, but we'll see whether it's just a cramp or an injury,'' said Pellegrini.

City eased past Southampton, making light of referee Mike Jones' controversial decision not to award a penalty when Jose Fonte upended Sergio Aguero.

Jones instead booked Aguero for diving, before City scored through Yaya Toure, Frank Lampard and Gael Clichy.

The win saw City close to within six points of early Premier League pace-setters Chelsea, with manager Pellegrini hailing the attitude and application of his side.

"We can complain about a lot of things from this team this year, that we are conceding too many goals and not scoring as many as last season,'' said Pellegrini.

"But the only thing that we cannot complain about in the squad is the spirit, the personality, the character and the ambition to continue winning."
