Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has been dropped by Brendan Rodgers while James Wilson starts for Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Mignolet has come in for criticism for his displays this season, with Brad Jones starting in goal for Liverpool. It is only Jones' eighth league appearance in four seasons at Liverpool.

Rodgers said: "Simon will benefit from being out of the spotlight. It's a great opportunity for Jones."

Mario Balotelli also returns from injury to take his place among the substitutes, with winger Raheem Sterling deployed up front for the visitors in favour of Rickie Lambert.

Wilson takes his place up front alongside Robin van Persie for United, while Louis van Gaal brings Phil Jones back into the centre of his defence next to Jonny Evans with Marcos Rojo picking up an injury in training.

Radamel Falcao once again has to settle for a place on the United bench, despite claims from Van Gaal that he has regained fitness.

"Falcao is fit to start, but we need James Wilson in this match for his speed," Van Gaal said. "I know and the players know that we need to improve. We still want to win the championship."
