Rodgers: We couldn't have done any more

Brendan Rodgers says goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has been dropped "indefinitely" from the Liverpool starting line-up.

Having come in for criticism this season after some poor displays, Mignolet was a notable absentee in the 3-0 defeat at Manchester United with Rodgers preferring to choose Brad Jones instead.

The Belgian may now be out for longer than expected with Jones set to keep his place for Wednesday's League Cup tie at Championship leaders Bournemouth.

"I said to Simon it was for an indefinite period," said Rodgers. "He has played in a lot of games and Brad in my first year came in and did very well.

"It is something that can happen to goalkeepers, taking them out of the firing line and give them time to reflect. Brad is very experienced and was always going to play in the Bournemouth game [League Cup].

"Simon has been fine. He is a really good professional. I spoke to him and he accepted it.

"Brad Jones didn't have much to do other than take the ball out of the net. It was giving an opportunity to someone. I just felt after the Basel game and reflecting after that that I needed to make the change."

Meanwhile, former Liverpool and Bournemouth midfielder Jimmy Case says Rodgers' side are "there for the taking" ahead of the quarter-final at Dean Court.

"If I was a Bournemouth fan I would be rubbing my hands," Case told the BBC.

"Liverpool are there for the taking. I watch Liverpool every game. The lack of confidence within the side, the work ethic, there is a lot of work to do to get them back on track."
