Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has warned Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy that a move to Cardiff City would be a "waste" of his talents.

Bellamy has been told to find a new club after falling out with City boss Roberto Mancini - and the Welshman has indicated that he is willing to play for Cardiff in order to be closer to his family.

Redknapp, who is trying to bring the player to White Hart Lane, has urged Bellamy not to drop down a division by joining Cardiff on loan.

"Craig is a Premier League player in my opinion," Redknapp said. "No disrespect to Cardiff, he should be playing top Premier League football. Good luck to Cardiff but it would be a waste of an outstanding player. He should stay in the Premier League, for sure."

If a switch to Cardiff does not materialise then Fulham - managed by Mark Hughes, who has a reputation for extracting the best from Bellamy - are thought to be the frontrunners in the race to secure the player's signature.

With those two clubs firmly in the hunt, Redknapp is not confident that he will be able to convince City to lend Bellamy to one of their rivals for a Champions League place. "Someone will have to end up buying him, unless City loan him to someone like Fulham, I can't see them loaning him to someone like us," he said.

"It would be a ridiculous loan. He was in the top two or three players last season yet everything is trying to loan him. They paid £12 million, why should they loan him?"
