'Police should swamp Wembley for Spurs v Chelsea'

The chairman of anti-discrimination group Kick It Out has urged police to "swamp" the League Cup final between Tottenham and Chelsea in order to prevent racist and anti-Semitic chanting.

Lord Herman Ouseley spoke out after a week in which Chelsea suspended fans after a racist incident on the Paris Metro before their Champions League game at Paris Saint-Germain.

On Sunday, supposed West Ham fans were filmed singing an anti-Semitic chant on a train as they travelled through Stamford Hill - a north London suburb with a large Jewish population - before the game at Spurs.

Lord Ouseley, speaking at the launch of new website hinch.as, said: "We have always had a lot of complaints when Spurs play Chelsea.

"We have got to have a high [police] presence. Anti-Semitism must be tackled with the same vigour as all other forms of discrimination.

"Personally I would swamp Wembley. The police used to say once: 'We are going to swamp Brixton, we are looking for the muggers. Any black person, we are going to pick them up and take them off the streets.'

"Swamp Wembley and start to flush out these people."

He warned that the rising number of anti-Semitic incidents in the UK showed increasing vigilance was needed, adding: "People can't just keep saying it's a Chelsea problem, or a Millwall problem or a West Ham problem. It's all of our problem."

Ouseley praised Chelsea for their swift response to what happened in Paris and noted that West Ham had said they would ban any fans found guilty of anti-Semitic chanting for life.

But he stressed that more was needed from Britain's football authorities, adding: "We have had a statement from the FA, nothing from the Premier League, nothing from the Football League, nothing from the PFA, nothing from the LMA - what's going on?"
