Chelsea have announced that club captain John Terry has signed a one-year contract extension to keep him at the club until the end of the 2015-16 season.

Terry, 34, had been on a deal at Stamford Bridge that was due to run out at the end of the current campaign, with the defender's future the subject of much speculation.

However, manager Jose Mourinho confirmed after his side's League Cup triumph earlier this month that Terry would be at the club next season and the Premier League leaders have now secured the centre-back's services for another year.

Terry told the club's official website: "I'm delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea. After adding another major trophy to my collection this month I hope myself, the players and manager can continue to bring success to our club.

"Playing for this great club makes me so proud. And as always I would like to thank the fans who have continually supported me."

Mourinho said: "This new contract is not to say 'thank you very much'; it is because John continues to perform. He is a top defender. I am happy that he completely deserves this new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches."

Terry has played every minute of the Chelsea's 29 Premier League games so far this season as they top the table by six points with a game in hand over second-placed Manchester City.

Since his debut for Chelsea in 1998, Terry has made 661 appearances, scoring a club-record 63 goals for a defender.

Chelsea have been linked with moves for moves for Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane and Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos in recent weeks, though the PSG youngster has signed a contract extension with the Ligue 1 champions until 2019.
