Manchester United won't sell Angel Di Maria

Manchester United are determined to keep Angel Di Maria at Old Trafford, club sources have told ESPN, despite recent uncertainty over his future.

Reports of United manager Louis van Gaal "berating" Di Maria, 27, in the dressing room following last week's 2-1 win at Liverpool have led to suggestions that he may move on this summer.

Despite an initially encouraging start to his Old Trafford career, the Argentina international's form has faded and he has been unsettled since his house was burgled in January.

Di Maria was reportedly set to sign for Paris Saint-Germain last summer - once Real Madrid had made the decision to sell him - before eventually joining United for a British record £59.7 million.

Sources state that agent Jorge Mendes, who has a very good relationship with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, played an influential role in bringing him to the club.

The signing was seen as a big-name coup for Woodward after what had been a frustrating summer in the transfer market and that is one reason why United have no wish to sell the player, with the belief that he can still prove to be a top performer at Old Trafford.

Despite reports that Di Maria was unhappy with some of Van Gaal's tactical instructions - including apparently being warned off running with the ball - ESPN sources have said that the midfielder is actually one of the few players that the Dutchman has given licence to make forward surges, while United will block any attempts from him to leave.

The Premier League club have also started to turn their attention to this summer's transfer window. Long-term interest in Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels is likely to be acted upon, with the belief that the German side will now be more willing to sell due to the expected absence of Champions League football, and its riches, next season.

Van Gaal may also insist on a move for Nigel De Jong - having coached him while Netherlands boss - with the midfielder likely to be available on a free transfer from AC Milan.
