The Football Association has rejected Bolton's appeal against Gary Cahill's red card at Arsenal, leaving the defender to immediately begin a three-match suspension.

The defender, 24, was shown a straight red by referee Stuart Atwell for a challenge from behind on Marouane Chamakh at Emirates Stadium on September 11.

The decision did not go down well with Trotters boss Owen Coyle, especially as his side went on to lose the match 4-1.

Upon reflection of the incident, Coyle decided to lodge an appeal in a bid to see the decision overturned - which the FA has now rejected.

A statement on the FA website read: ''At a Regulatory Commission hearing today, a claim for wrongful dismissal from Bolton Wanderers' defender Gary Cahill was dismissed. As a result, Cahill's three match suspension will remain and will be served with immediate effect.''

Consequently, Cahill will miss upcoming games against Aston Villa, Manchester United and a Carling Cup tie with Burnley.
