England failed to find the target as they were frustrated to a 0-0 draw by Montenegro at Wembley.

Montenegro remain top of Group G after extending their unbeaten run to four matches after their defence held firm to deny strikers Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch. England dominated the possession, but could not make their possesion count as Crouch and Rooney both had chances well saved by Mladen Bozovic.

England were denied a late penalty after Milan Jovanovic handled the ball in the area, and just moments later the defender could have secured all three points for Montenegro when his strike clattered the crossbar. Fabio Capello handed Kevin Davies his England debut but he failed to inspire England, as they failed to score at the new Wembley stadium for the first time.

Fernando Llorente denied Scotland a point after a valiant performance against world champions Spain at Hampden Park. Llorente fired home the winner from close range to secure all three points after Craig Levein's men battled back from two goals down.

A David Villa penalty gave the world champions the lead after Steven Whittaker handled the ball in the area. But just moments after Andres Iniesta looked to have sealed the win, Scotland hit back through Steven Naismith.

A rejuvenated Scottish side began to press for an equaliser, and looked to have secured a point when Gerard Pique diverted the ball into his own net from James Morrison's cross. But Llorente's late winner broke Scottish hearts, and to add insult to injury, Whittaker was shown a second yellow card for Scotland after a heavy challenge on Sergio Ramos.

Wales remain without a win in Group G after they were beaten 4-1 by Switzerland in Basle. Despite losing goalkeeper Diego Benaglio to injury, the home side took an early lead through Valentin Stocker's header.

Gareth Bale kept Wales in the contest, equalising just five minutes later after a one-on-one with the substitute keeper Marco Wolfli, but Switzerland took the lead once more when an unmarked Marco Streller finished. Two late goals from Gokhan Inler and Stocker sealed an emphatic win for Switzerland who sealed their first win of their qualifying campaign.

Robbie Keane missed a penalty as Republic of Ireland were forced to settle for a draw in Slovakia. Sean St Ledger made Ireland's early pressure count when he smashed home a loose ball after a free-kick.

But they were pegged back when Jan Durica equalised with a powerful header at the far post after Marek Hamsik's corner was flicked on. It looked like Ireland could be on course for three points when Aiden McGeady was brought down by Jan Mucha, but the keeper atoned for his mistake when he stopped the Spurs' striker's attempt on the stroke of half-time.

Kyle Lafferty spared Northern Ireland's blushes as his late goal salvaged a 1-1 draw away to the lowly Faroe Islands. Having held former world champions Italy to a goalless draw in Belfast on Friday, Nigel Worthington's side were left to reflect on a hatful of wasted chances as they failed to find their way past a team ranked nearly 100 places below them.

It was nearly a surprise result at Svangaskard when Christian Holst outmuscled defender Stephen Craigan and drilled a low left-footed strike past the diving Maik Taylor on the hour-mark. But Lafferty, who has been in impressive form for Rangers this season, took it upon himself to find an equaliser, and his strike from the edge of the area after an impressive solo effort secured a point.

Italy had their match with Serbia abandoned after only eight minutes following crowd trouble. The game at Genoa's Luigi Ferraris stadium was delayed for 35 minutes after a section of Serbian fans threw fire crackers and flares onto the pitch. The game eventually got underway, but it only lasted a matter of minutes when Scottish referee Craig Thomson stopped play after a narrowly missed Italy goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.
