Roberto Mancini has defended Nigel de Jong's challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa as well as playing down talk of a rift with Carlos Tevez.

De Jong has faced widespread criticism after his tackle left Ben Arfa with a double leg break during Manchester City's 2-1 win over Newcastle, with Chris Hughton saying it was "a challenge that did not need to be made".

Netherlands boss Bert van Marwijk dropped de Jong from his squad in response to the challenge, while Marseille have threatened legal action, but Mancini feels the incident has been misrepresented.

"I am very disappointed with the people who spoke about Nigel de Jong's tackle," Mancini said. "I am sorry for Ben Arfa but these things happen in football. It was a normal tackle."

Regarding his omission from the Netherlands squad, he added: "He was disappointed to be left out but this is normal. He is a Holland player and has always given 100% for them. I think he will try to get back in the Holland team."

There was also controversy at City as news leaked of a half-time row between Mancini and Tevez during the Newcastle game, with the striker apparently criticising his manager's defensive approach.

Mancini, though, says he understands the frustrations of players and that he does not have an issue with his captain.

"I played football," he said. "I understand when you are tired you might say something you do not want to say. For me it is no problem."
