Redknapp sets sights on Rooney
Harry Redknapp is never afraid at having a tilt at the transfer market and the Tottenham Hotspur boss has confirmed he would be interested in making a move for Wayne Rooney.
Sir Alex Ferguson rocked British football on Tuesday afternoon when confirming Rooney wanted to leave Manchester United. The great and the good of world football are already jockeying for position in the hunt for England's finest attacking talent.
Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has admitted he is waiting by the telephone for a call and Redknapp has confirmed he would ask his chairman to enter the race.
"I will speak to my chairman and see if we can get Rooney to Tottenham," Redknapp said. "I doubt very much whether that will happen, but...
"If he is going to stay in England, who knows? You've got to be interested when the very best players become available, but it will be a big ask. There will be some big fish out there wanting to take Rooney. He is a fantastic player, he's having a bad spell but he is a great player.
"Wayne Rooney will be a free agent and what an amazing situation. He is going to want a decent signing-on fee, he's not going to be cheap."
Redknapp feels Ferguson was right to go public and confirm Rooney wanted to head for pastures new.
He said: "I have not seen Alex's statement but I am sure it is honest and open. That has got to be good, these things need to come out. The game belongs to the people; the people should know what happens in football. The most important people are the people who pay the wages."
