Steve Bruce was in no mood to mince his words following Sunderland's 5-1 defeat to Newcastle, describing the game as the worst moment of his entire footballing career.

The Black Cats fell 3-0 down by half time on Sunday as Shola Ameobi added to Kevin Nolan's first-half brace, and the pair added a goal apiece after the break to inflict an embarrassing result on Bruce's side. Titus Bramble also saw red for a professional foul to add to a nightmare afternoon.

Asked if it was his worst moment in football management, Bruce said: ''In football management? Probably in my career I would have thought.

''It's still trying to sink in what we have just witnessed. Everything that could go wrong on the day went wrong. Penalties, red cards, poor defending. Rolled into one it's been a disastrous afternoon. We have to hold our hands up and say we were well beaten. To come here and play like that, it's not acceptable.''

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton heard his name chanted by the St James' Park faithful at the full time whistle, which will have acted as the perfect remedy after he was installed as the bookies' favourite to be sacked.

''When I see the stadium we have and the support we have, to see the reaction from them is what the game is all about,'' he said. ''We knew what game it was and what it meant to them. ''[The fans' support] means a lot but for me it's never been the most important thing. The most important thing is seeing this group doing well.''
