John Terry vowed he will "still give everything" for his country after being dropped from his role as England captain following Friday's crisis talks with manager Fabio Capello. Rio Ferdinand will now lead England into the 2010 World Cup.

Capello confirmed the news at 4.15pm on Friday, following a 12-minute meeting with Terry. The Italian released an official statement through the FA making it clear that it was his decision, not Terry's, to strip the Chelsea man of the armband.

"After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry," Capello's statement read.

"As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad. What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice. John Terry was notified first."

Terry arrived at the home of English football, Wembley Stadium, to discuss revelations of an alleged affair with the ex-girlfriend of England left back Wayne Bridge. Terry had reportedly been keen to maintain his captain's armband with the 2010 World Cup only four months away.

"I fully respect Fabio Capello's decision," Terry said in a brief statement. "I will continue to give everything for England."

Capello admitted it was a desire to protect his England side from outside issues that prompted Friday's decision. Terry is said to have retained the support of the majority of his team-mates but Capello - known for his sharp discipline - took it upon himself to relieve the defender of his duties.

Steven Gerrard had been the bookies' favourite to take over as captain of the national side, but Capello confirmed his team structure would remain undisturbed, meaning vice-captain Ferdinand steps into the spotlight.

"When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision," stated Capello.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank The FA, particularly Lord David Triesman and Ian Watmore for allowing me to make this decision in my own time and in the best interest of the team."
