Asamoah Gyan bagged his third goal in two games to earn Sunderland a fine 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur.
Rafael van der Vaart reported himself fit for duty following a hamstring injury and duly fired Spurs ahead on 64 minutes. The finish was simplicity itself, but it left Sunderland boss Steve Bruce in a spin as the Tottenham man appeared to control the ball with his hand before slotting the ball home.
It was not enough to earn the win as Gyan is proving to be a real find for Sunderland and he bagged a point for the Black Cats when pouncing on an error from Younes Kaboul to slot home.
Stoke City snapped their five-game losing streak, with Dean Whitehead slotting home late in the day to hand his side a 3-2 win over Birmingham City.
The Potters put their manager Tony Pulis through the wringer, as they threw away a two-goal lead before digging in to claim the points.
Robert Huth lashed Stoke ahead before the interval and Blues looked dead and buried when Ricardo Fuller curled home a stunning effort on 71 minutes, his 100th goal in British football, just seconds after Blues had squandered a glorious chance.
Keith Fahey climbed off the bench to volley his side back into the contest and Cameron Jerome continued his purple patch against Stoke by heading home his sixth goal in as many games against the Potters. His effort was not enough to earn his side a draw as some sloppy defending enabled Whitehead to bundle home the winner - although there was a suspicion of handball in the build-up to the goal.
