Liverpool have confirmed that star striker Fernando Torres has sustained an ankle ligament strain but the injury is not sufficiently serious to prevent him linking up with Spain next week.

Torres suffered the injury in Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium although he remained on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

Reds manager Roy Hodgson said he hoped to have the striker at his disposal for the home game against West Ham on November 20 and Liverpool have received the good news that Torres is not seriously injured.

He will now undergo further examination by Spain's medical staff prior to the country's friendly international against Portugal on Wednesday. Torres has missed Spain's past two games - Euro 2012 qualfiers against Lithuania and Scotland - due to fitness problems.

A Liverpool statement read: "The Reds' medical team have been in contact with their Spanish counterparts to keep them up to date on the 26-year-old's condition. Torres will have the injury further assessed by the Spanish medical staff ahead of the friendly in Lisbon on Wednesday."
