Liverpool's medical staff have reacted angrily to Steven Gerrard's injury picked up at Wembley on Wednesday, labelling the English FA "absolutely disgraceful".

Gerrard limped off after 85 minutes of the 2-1 friendly defeat to France clutching a hamstring and, although a full assessment of the problem is yet to be made, the pictures of Liverpool's captain leaving the field in pain did not look good.

The England midfielder has had a heavy schedule for club and country since returning from the World Cup and, with Liverpool hovering in the lower half of the Premier League table, the Merseyside club needs its skipper fully fit.

Reacting to the apparent injury, Darren Burgess, head of fitness and conditioning, said on Twitter: "Unbelievable from all associated with England and English FA with regard to SG's injury. Completely ignored agreement and past history.

"Completely amateurish and now we pay for their incompetence. Absolutely disgraceful."

With Dirk Kuyt also still nursing an ankle injury picked up while on duty for Netherlands, Liverpool physio Chris Morgan commented on his Twitter account: "Stevie getting injured... more evidence if it was needed of why I hate internationals."
