Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has applauded his players' efforts in topping a group he rated as the toughest in this year's Champions League.

The Spurs manager saw his side draw 3-3 in typically entertaining fashion against FC Twente in their final Group A outing - a result which proved enough to keep Tottenham in top spot following Inter Milan's defeat at Werder Bremen.

It also confirmed Redknapp's side as the top scorers in the group phase and Redknapp was delighted with the final standings on his side's maiden appearance in the competition.

"At the start of this I said this was a tough group - we've got a team near the top of the Dutch league, Werder Bremen, who are a good side with lots of good players, and we've got the holders, Inter Milan. I think it was the toughest group and to top it is brilliant,'' he told Sky Sports.

"We've gone for it every game. We've come in thinking we could win and that's how we play. We got goals and we conceded them, that's how it is.

"We tend to score plenty and seem to give them away too. You want to win all your games so we wanted to win here but it's important to finish top of the group and we've done that so I'm proud of the boys.''

Jermain Defoe, who netted twice on his first Champions League start, added: "We worked so hard to get here and you have to make the most of it. We've scored a lot of goals but it's also important not to concede too many so it was frustrating tonight.

"We'll take each game as it comes but we're playing well and scoring goals and there are one of two injuries to come back in too. We're looking good at the moment.''
