Newcastle have appointed Alan Pardew as their new manager to replace Chris Hughton.

The former West Ham boss has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract at St James' Park and will take over the helm in time for the visit of Liverpool on Saturday, live on ESPN.

Pardew replaces Hughton, who was sacked on Monday, and paid tribute to his predecessor's efforts in securing Newcastle's promotion to the Premier League last season.

"I understand what this club means to its supporters," Pardew said. "Throughout the football world people recognise that this is a unique club in many ways, with supporters who are second to none in their loyalty, passion and devotion to the team.

"Chris Hughton did a great job last season, guiding the club back to the Premier League. He continued that good work this season. It is my aim to build on that now and take this club forward."

Pardew takes over with Newcastle in 12th, four points clear of the relegation zone, and vowed to win over any sceptical Toon fans with his attacking football.

"I'm not a Geordie of course, but I'm a football person with a love of the game and I can assure you I bring great drive, desire and commitment to the job," he said. "I have always managed teams that have played attacking positive football, something I know the supporters here appreciate."

He becomes the club's sixth manager in three years, having left Southampton earlier in the season. The former Charlton manager will be unveiled by the club at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
