Former world No. 1 Tiger Woods has confirmed he will begin his 2011 PGA Tour season at next week's Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

The year of 2010 was a disappointing one for Woods, as he went winless for the first time in his professional career and lost out on the top spot in the world rankings to Lee Westwood. But after working hard on his game during the winter, he is looking forward to greater success this season.

"I'm really looking forward to competing," Woods said on his official website. "I've been working hard on my game, and I'm excited about 2011."

The event at Torrey Pines - scene of Woods' memorable 2008 US Open victory - has proven a happy hunting ground for Woods, who has won on his last five starts in competitions held at the seaside course. The 35-year-old was widely expected to begin his season at the event, despite missing it in 2009 through injury and 2010 due to the fallout surrounding his private life.

Woods has been working hard on his game with new coach Sean Foley in the off-season. The duo linked up after Woods ended his arrangement with former swing doctor Hank Haney prior to last year's PGA Championship, and subsequently oversaw a slow but steady improvement in results up until the end of the 2010 season - including a second place in his last event at the Chevron World Challenge.

"I feel a lot more comfortable about the changes we have made," Woods said. "Hopefully, my good play at the end of last year will carry over."
