West Bromwich Albion manager Roberto di Matteo has confirmed that the club are interested in Aston Villa striker John Carew.

Carew has been on the fringes of the first-team under Gerard Houllier, and has fallen further down the pecking order following the arrival of £24 million signing Darren Bent.

The Norway international is expected to leave the club in January, with Di Matteo keen to pounce in order to relieve the goalscoring burden on Peter Odemwingie's shoulders.

Odemwingie has netted eight times in the Premier League, while the second-highest scorer, James Morrison, has struck on three occasions.

"They [Villa] know of our interest [in Carew]," Di Matteo said. "But obviously it has been a bit hectic there the last couple of days [with the Bent signing]. We have a few other options as well that we are pushing forward with."

Carew is yet to score in any of his ten Premier League appearances for Aston Villa this season.
